Seonaid's Recommended Grammar Books
This is my personal list of grammar books (and others) I've found useful. I use them all myself - I have to really like a book to put it on this page!

English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy This is one of the classic intermediate English grammar books. It starts with the verb 'to be' and goes through almost everything you will need for the intermediate and upper intermediate levels. Each grammar point is well explained, with information on one side of the page, and exercises on the other side. If you are intermediate, or you have a higher level but would like to review your grammar, this is the perfect book. |

Essential Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy This is a similar book to the one above (and written by the same person) but this one is for beginners. It has more basic exercises (for example, more practice of the present tenses) and is very good if your grammar base is not very strong. If you can, get the book with the CD Rom as it includes a lot more exercises. |

Get Rid of Your Accent by Linda James It's true that this isn't about grammar, but it's the best pronunciation book I've found so far. The writer used to teach actors how to speak with different accents and the book talks about all the different sounds in English - it comes with two CDs and there are lots of examples. This book is even used by native English speakers who have strong accents. Some of the example sentences are very funny (because they are written to include the sound being practised, not to make sense) but this is a very useful book. |
